By combining Virgin Australia's renowned customer service with Qatar Airways' world-class fleet, 28 new weekly flights will commence on the following long-haul international routes in 2025. Qatar Airways will be operating these routes on behalf of Virgin Australia with a VA flight number (VA1 - 29).

Disruptions

In the event of a disruption to a Virgin Australia flight operated by Qatar Airways (flight numbers VA1 to VA29), either Virgin Australia or Qatar Airways will assist you with alternative flight options, depending on the time to your departure.

More than 72 hours to departure.

If the original scheduled departure time for your flight is more than 72 hours away, Virgin Australia will contact you to assist.

Less than 72 hours to departure.

If the original scheduled departure time for your flight is less than 72 hours away, Qatar Airways will contact you to assist.

Guests whose final destination is Doha.

If your final destination is Doha (no onward connection), you will be contacted by Virgin Australia regardless of the time until your departure.

What if Virgin Australia cancels your flight?

If we cancel your flight, we will move you to the next available Virgin Australia flight to the same destination without charge.

If the new flight time is not suitable to you, we may transfer you to a service operated by another carrier to your original destination, subject to your agreement.

If we cannot make suitable alternative arrangements, you may request a travel credit or a refund of the price you paid for your impacted flight by contacting our Guest Contact Centre or your travel agent. Travel credits will be valid for 12 months from the date of issue (excluding USA flight bookings). For bookings with a flight into, out of or within the USA, you can request this refund online by following the prompts in the email or SMS you receive about the change or cancellation (or via your travel agent if this is how you booked). Travel credits for bookings with a USA flight will be valid for five years from the date of issue. All travel credits will be subject to additional terms and conditions.

Check-in

Online check-in

Online check-in is available for journeys that commence in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney and opens at 48 hours prior to departure (unless you are traveling on to the USA in which case it will open at 24 hours prior to departure).

If your journey is eligible for online check-in you will receive a check-in reminder email (to your designated email address) and the Virgin Australia App will prompt you to check-in online.

Checking in at a domestic, regional or short haul international airport

Guests who are travelling with us on a VA domestic, regional or short haul international flight before connecting to one of Virgin Australia’s international flights to Doha will need to proceed to the airport to check-in.

Domestic & regional departures

You will be checked-in and receive a boarding pass for your domestic flight only and your bags will be checked through to your final destination.

Upon arrival in Brisbane, Perth, Sydney or Melbourne please proceed to the Qatar Airways check-in area located in the international terminal (please refer to the “Checking in from a main hub” section below) to check-in and collect your onward boarding pass(es).

Short haul international

You will be checked-in and receive a boarding pass for your flight to Australia only, your bags will be checked through to your final destination.

Upon arrival into Australia, please proceed to the international transit desk within the international terminal to be checked-in for your international journey and collect your onward boarding pass(es). You do not need to collect your bags.

If you have an extended wait between flights, note that you can only exit the airport and enter Australia if you meet the Travel and entry requirements.

Checking in from a main hub

Checking in for return to Australia

On your return to Australia, online check-in will be made available for all journey types through Qatar Airways 48 hours prior to departure (unless you are departing from the USA in which case it will open 24 hours prior to departure): Qatar Airways online check-in.

If you are departing from Doha, check-in counters for Economy guests are located in the main terminal please check the departure boards for which zone and row. Business class guests may check-in at the Al Mourjan Business premium check-in (Row 2).

For all guests arriving into Australia and transferring to a domestic flight via Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, you will be required to collect your bags and pass through customs and immigration before rechecking your bags for your onward flight.

Australian international airports

Our Business class, Velocity Gold and Platinum guests travelling from Brisbane, Sydney and Perth may enjoy complimentary access to the following lounges prior to departure.

Brisbane

Air New Zealand Lounge

After security and immigration, walk through the duty free area, turn right and travel up the escalator between gates 81 and 82. The lounge is to the left.

Melbourne

Marhaba Lounge

After security screening and immigration, walk past the Duty-free shopping and find the lounge is located up the escalator on level 3 between Gates 9 and 11.

Perth

Air New Zealand Lounge

After security screening and immigration, walk past the Duty-free shopping and find the lounge entrance adjacent to Gate 52A.

Sydney

Air New Zealand Lounge

After completing customs and security checks, turn right and walk towards gate 59, which is near the entrance to our lounge located on the mezzanine level above the departure gates.

Doha (Hamad International Airport)

Lounge access

Guests travelling in our Business class cabins (including Qsuite) can experience complimentary Al Mourjan Business lounge access located on Level 3 at Hamad International Airport when transiting through Doha.

The Qatar Airways Platinum and Gold lounges are available for our Velocity Platinum and Gold members to access when not travelling in business class.

  • Platinum Lounge South and Gold Lounge South: Located on Level 1 next to gate A1.
  • Platinum & Gold Lounge North: Located on Level 2 next to gate C14.

All Virgin Australia guests have the option option to purchase lounge access where available. Please refer to the Qatar Airways Lounges website for more information.

Transfer information

For transfers at Doha (Hamad International Airport), upon disembarking your aircraft, please go directly to the Transfer halls located at concourses A, B, C and D. You will be required to pass through security screening prior to entering the departures hall.

If you have any issues along the way or require assistance, please go to the transfers information desk or use the airport map to find your way.

Arrival information

If you are leaving the airport or spending time in Qatar, Australian passport holders are entitled to apply for a visa on arrival. The type of visa you need will depend on your country of residence and the purpose of your travel.

If it is your first time in Doha you must proceed to the immigration desks, entry via e-gates are restricted to accepted passports and those who have previously entered Doha only. If in doubt please ask a member of staff for assistance. You may be asked to show proof of your accommodation for the duration of your stay if applicable in Qatar on arrival at Doha (Hamad International Airport).

Qatari authorities will not issue visas to holders of an Australian emergency passport. You can only use an emergency passport to leave or travel through Qatar.
